Concrete was first used by the ancient Romans and cement is still commonly regarded as the most significant binding material used in construction. It also plays a key role in bricklaying and this construction course lays out the characteristics and applications of cement. We begin by describing the process of bricklaying and the duties of a bricklayer, which include measuring out areas and maintaining or repairing existing structures. We then examine several tools like bolster chisels, spirit levels and ‘pointing hawks’. The course discusses fine and coarse aggregates, aggregate storage for concrete and the factors to consider when mixing concrete for various uses.
The course then moves on to mortar and its essential characteristics. We explain how sand affects the water content of mortar mixes and show you how to check the cleanliness of sand using the ‘Field Settling Test’. We then compare the processes of mixing mortar by hand and machine. The course discusses bricks and blocks and examines their attributes and manufacturing methods. ‘Setting out’ is the most important phase that must be finished before construction work starts.
